Identifying the signs of autism in toddlers can be one of those pinnacle moments for a parent in their child's life. Doctors typically won't diagnose any autistic behavior until the child has reached at least 3 or 4 years of age. When it comes to treating autism, the earlier you start, the more successful it will be. The problem is that autistic behavior can be seen in children within the first year. As a parent, you should look out for these signs immediately. If you assume your child is autistic, when they really aren't, is negligible. Assuming your child is normal, when they really have autism, can be a life-changing event. The earlier you identify the signs of autism in toddlers, the sooner you...
Find Out The History, Symptoms and Treatment Of...
Autism is known by several different names. Some call it autism, others call it Autistic Spectrum Disorder, and others refer to it by what is typically known as a "lighter" form of autism, Aspergers Syndrome or Aspergers Disorder. The disorder is usually identified by a marked delay in a child's areas of communication and social interactions. While autism is not only found in children, it can typically be successfully identified during the first three years of a child's life. Autistic spectrum disorder is a difficult affliction to diagnose. There is not a physical ailment that can be readily seen, such as a broken arm or open wound, yet the affliction can be much worse than either of those if...
How To Overcome Your Speech Problem
Do you have a speech problem or speech impediment? I have managed to overcome a stutter which had had a major negative affect on my life for eighteen years. This article describes about how to overcome a speech problem and how to achieve fluency. According to recent figures around one percent of British people suffer from the speech impediment known as stuttering. Stuttering can also be known in some regions as stammering. I myself had a stutter from the age of four and during the period when I had the speech impediment, I had a fear of certain words beginning with certain letters. Any words which began with "b" were especially hard to say. I also had a fear saying words which began with d, v, g...
Do you have a speech impediment? Are you looking at ways in which you can overcome your speech impediment? Do you hate your speech impediment? Does your speech impediment dictate your life? Up until around ten years ago I would have answered yes to all of these questions but have now managed to achieve fluency and life has never been so good. My own speech impediment started when I was just four years of age, well this is what my parents have told me. I had for whatever reason developed what I call a stammer or what most people call a stutter. Looking back this must have been a huge cause of concern for my parents and it would have been difficult for them to know where to look for help. Now that I...

Therapy For Young Children Who Have a Stammer
What types of therapy are available to parents of young children who have a stammer? To hear your child stammer can be truly heartbreaking and extremely worrying. Parents often start to question as to how or why the child has started to stammer and will be eager to find a solution. It can be very difficult to teach a young person any form of speech therapy technique. Techniques which would be extremely beneficial to teenagers and adults can be quite hard to understand for someone so young. This only adds to the frustration of the parent who can certainly see how and why the treatment could work but do not want to wait until their sibling is of an age to understand. This is where patience comes in...
Speech Dysfunctions In Parkinson's Disease
Parkinson's disease often affects the patient's ability to speak clearly and this is often considered one of its worse symptoms. For many patients, the loss of their ability to communicate clearly to others is heartbreaking. For these patients, they have the added problem of feeling as if they have some sort of dementia. It is important to remember that a Parkinson's patient can hear himself just fine. It has been estimated that between 65-90% of Parkinson's disease sufferers will ultimately have troubles with their speech, and these problems can become apparent in explicit ways which include speaking in either a monotone or unintelligible gibberish. At times, patients hesitate before actually...
Speech Delay Or Apraxia?
My daughter with apraxia could best be described as "consistently inconsistent". As she grew, one day she could say certain words, the next day she couldn't. She said "hi" for quite awhile, and then she stopped saying it. Her speech did not grow in a normal pattern. She generally said partial words, such as "ju" for juice. At age three she said about thirty partial words. She really didn't begin to speak until age four and then it was in three to four word sentences. She also had issues with not having the ability to blow out her birthday candles, and singing was very difficult for her as she had trouble with fluency. She also had delays in fine motor skills and gross motor skills. My son at age two...
How I Cured My Stuttering Speech Impediment
I would like to thank you (my local speech therapist) for all of your efforts thus far however I do not really believe that it is helping me in the way that I had hoped. I am not interested in accepting second best and am basically looking for a cure to my stuttering speech impediment. The reply from the speech therapist was rather negative in that he stated that there was not a known cure for stuttering. I therefore decided to embark on my own quest and search to find the solution to this most frustrating form of speech impediment. There was absolutely no way that I could contemplate having to live the rest of my life with a stutter. Stuttering had been a major thorn in my side ever since it had...

Impediments to Speech and Their Respective...
The detailed education regarding the impediments to speech and their respective treatments is known as the speech pathology. Other than the speech impediment, disorders of verbal communication, tone and gulping are also included in this category. It is known differently in different countries but is most commonly known as the speech therapy. In spite of this being a health discipline the individuals who practice this are not known as the medical practitioners or physicians but as a speech pathologist. These therapists are performing their services in the health care centers, the medical centers, universities and personal homes to name a few. Several work privately and see patients at their...

You know your child's speech has not been developing normally. After taking him to his physician, you were referred to see a Speech and Language Pathologist. Our Child's Speech Delay Story For Your...
When my youngest son was born everything seemed fine. It wasn't until he turned two that we began to get concerned. The pediatrician assured us that Caleb was on track and everything would be fine. Caleb had an older brother who did all of his talking for him. However, when Caleb turned three we were still very concerned at his lack of speech. His older brother could sing the alphabet on his second birthday. We were very encouraged that Caleb seemed normal other than his speech delay. We had no idea what we were up against. We would have countless trips to the pediatrician and speech therapists. We have had many speech therapists over the years. The first one was a fruit cake. In Caleb's first...
Autism like many other disorders around the world comes with a number of symptoms which can really have a negative effect on the sufferer. In this article I will be discussing what effect that children with autism have on their parents or carers. The hope is that this will make you aware of the time and effort put in by people to look after children with autism and how we should be supporting these carers and helping them get the funding they need. First off just think to yourself, how long a day does a parent spend looking after their young children on average, it's fairly long but the tasks are not as difficult as they would be if the child had autism. A parent looking after a child with autism is...
The first signs of autism occur during the early infancy and the disorder is usually diagnosed by the age of three when parents are alarmed by the abnormal development of their child. Infants mostly develop normally until the age of 2 when the growth as well as the mental development rapidly regresses. The autistic symptoms vary from one patient to another, from mild to severe forms. Between the first warning signs is the abnormal response to different stimuli like light or sound. Noises may appear painful to them, smells are overwhelmingly strong and touches are receipted as pains. Loud noises caused by vehicles or machines, and very bright lights from different sources, trigger crises and...

Autism in Ireland
There may be countries in the world where it is more difficult to be born with autism, but there are few in Western Europe, or indeed the developed world, that are worse than Ireland. Until the recent past Ireland enjoyed a period of economic prosperity unrivaled in any country. Zero unemployment, monumental levels of development, a financial surplus in the government coffers year after year, with the result that little was spent in any thoughtful way on the education of children and adolescents with autism. There is an absolute disinterest on the part of Ireland's politicians to care about people with autism. Over the past twelve years nearly one hundred or more people were compelled to take cases...
One of the challenges of using positive behavior support with a child with Autism is the whole concept of catching them being good. To be able to use positive behavior supports in any whole successful way a parent must find way to reward a child. This seems to be very difficult for some of us. If we were raised with the concept of using punishment in what ever way our parents chose, it is hard to change our way of thinking. If we misbehaved punishment was meant to show us the error of our ways and motivate us to do better. It seemed to work for us so why not now? The difference with a child with Autism is the lack of understanding of punishment. Punishment does not seem to be a motivator. Punishment...
Autism Sensory Integration - Why Are Small...
If you have young children with Autism, you may have noticed they shy away from you and others. Part of the reason for this is the sensory problems that a child with Autism can have. Many children with Autism do not like to be touched. They can draw their hands back if you try to touch them like something is hot. One of the ways to combat this is by using small tools that a children with Autism might like to touch. The tool might be as simple as a small tub with sand or water in it. It could also be something like a koosh ball. A koosh ball is a plastic ball with things that look like hair or spines coming out of it. There are soft one and hard ones. Parents can find them at dollar stores. Being...
Autism Communication - Why is Communication...
Imagine not being able to speak. Imagine knowing information and not being able to share it or hurting and not being able to tell anyone where. These are some of the reasons communication is so critical to everyone. Now complicate the inability to communicate with uncomfortable. Think of the uncomfortable scratching of the clothes on your body. Do you balance your body on the hard surface of a chair? What if you did not understand how to shift to relieve the pressure? Now think of sounds. Do you hear the soft hiss of a heater or the whisper of a fan? Some children with Autism hear the same hiss as a deafening spitting sound or the fan as a booming chugging sound. Those sounds and others cause pain...
Parents spend a lot of time looking for the proper diagnosis. Although a diagnosis is important for several reasons it is only a tool. It gives parents a framework to start working with. A diagnosis allows parents to look at whether or not a specific behavior is typical for a child with Autism. Children being children, some behaviors will be part of the diagnosis and some behaviors will be ones that are typical for a lot of children. That is always one of the things to look at, is the behavior for someone at my child's age or developmental level. It also allows parents to start with a variety of interventions that have already worked for other people with that diagnosis. Basically parents of...
Autism Circle of Support - Why Do Parents Need...
A Circle of Support for a child with Autism or the parent of that child is one of the most neglected areas. It is not surprising that this is true. It will also not be surprising that a Circle of Support can become an integral part of the answer to our children's long term well being. Between doctor's appointments, therapy, meetings at school, evaluations, and just plain keeping our children alive, time is one of the things we have little of. Forget the fact that parents have to work, buy groceries, pay bills, and maybe sleep. On the other hand finding time for a Circle of Support is like trying to do long range planning. Everything will go much smoother if parents can make the time to do it. It...

What to Do If Your Toddler is Not Talking Yet
If all of your friends toddlers are babbling away and your toddler is not talking yet you may have reason to become concerned. One of the things parents often use to gauge their child's development is how early they start talking. Babies start off experimenting with noises from an early age, usually consisting of babbling noises, the typical "goo goo" and "gaa gaa" sounds, these will turn into "ma ma" and "da da". These babbling sounds eventually progress into Mommy and Daddy. So how do you determine whether your child has delayed speech development and what do you do if your toddler is not talking yet? On a daily basis your child will find different ways to shape their mouth and change the noise...
Most parents have heard of this recent parenting craze but not a lot of parents actually know what baby sign language involves. Many would naturally assume that you teach adult sign language to your baby, but this is not entirely correct. Let me explain why baby signing is very different to adult signing. Sign language for people with hearing difficulties is dramatically different from our spoken language; it isn't just a matter of substituting words with signs in the same sequence. To learn this language effectively, it takes as much effort as it would to learn any new language as it follows its own rhythm and structure. If you were to attempt to learn sign language in order to teach your baby, it...
Self esteem issues are one of the root causes for behavioral problems in children. In most cases, treating this cause has been found to show remarkable results. All you have to do is see the signs objectively and make a decision to take steps to set the situation right. The longer self esteem issues continue, the greater the chances of them turning into permanent behavior problems. Here are some signs of low self esteem in a child. In some cases it might help to bring it to the attention of a school teacher, child care professional or a person trained to help with behavior problems. In other cases, all it requires is doing small things to boost the child's confidence. *One of the best ways to spot a...
How to Correct a Child's Behavior
Child behavior instruction can be very beneficial in terms of altering improper behaviors. If you feel like you have had it up to here with your child's behavior or attitude, this article holds a good solution. At what time an adult considers a child's behavior as disrespectful, disruptive, or defiant, the adult generally grumbles, "That kid should have more discipline." How uncommon is it that someone will say, "That child should have more understanding." Occasionally additional determination might certainly be called for, but even then the root cause of the difficulty comes from a lack of accurate and deep understanding of the child. To upgrade your child's behavior, it will take you implementing...
Parents and Bad Behavior
Fear! It seems to strike you often when your child is in your presence, particularly when you appear in public. How can everyone else describe your child with words like "quiet, well-mannered, and polite?" Are they talking about the same child that becomes a terrorist in your presence? What's wrong? The technical term is "situational misbehavior." In other words there is something going on that either allows, provokes or evokes, or, in some way, rewards your child's inappropriate behavior with you. Since it is not occurring everywhere, it is a parent issue, not a child issue. Much comes down to issues of behavioral management. Before you beat yourself up with guilt, let's examine each of these...
Reading a bedtime story to our child at an early age can greatly motivate your children to learn how to read at an early age. Parents undoubtedly want the best for their children and the best way to get them started to is motivate them to learn how to read. There are many things parents can do to help children succeed in school. One of the better ways is to read to your kids, whatever their ages, bedtime stories that will draw their interest and stimulate their imagination. Some parents even begin reading aloud bedtime stories to their children during infancy until they fall asleep. Reading to your children contributes enormously to develop your baby's attention span and receptive language skills...
Talk Your Child Clever
Most parents can hardly wait for their baby to say its first word. This usually happens between the nine months and a year. From about two years, the child should be able to use simple phrases, and by three he should be able to use full sentences. By four, he should be fully able to talk, although he may still make grammatical errors. By five, he should have acquired basic language. There is little doubt that language acquisition is one of the key milestones in early childhood development. Much of a child's future social and intellectual development hinges on this milestone. A language delay can lead to isolation and withdrawal, and to learning difficulties and poor academic performance. Recent...

Counselling With Difference
One of the foremost challenges facing counselling professionals is to understand the complex role that client diversity plays in their work. In counselling, each client's needs and objectives need to be considered and used to guide the counselling process. These needs vary for each individual according to factors such as personality, culture, gender and age. Counselling with Difference It is vital that counsellors working with issues of difference recognise the unique needs of their client and plan intervention accordingly. The counsellor must decide on the approach that will provide better responsiveness from the client, and therefore lead to a constructive outcome. The Impact of Prejudice on Self...
Autism, Entangled Energy - Sending, Joining,...
Joining at higher levels of consciousness with my friends with autism broadened my conception of the universe, as they led me on an internal journey to an ever-evolving belief system. Intuition, joined energy, direct knowing, and telepathy had now become part of my perceptual reality. To send, to join, and to receive are the three key terms I have chosen to describing the process. Each has its purpose. It is difficult to describe, but I will try. "Sending" is a conscious effort to send mental prompts telepathically. I do this to help the student stay on track. I am allowing him to access answers through me. I purposely use this as a prompt in an attempt to help him organize his thinking which is...
Pregnancy, Fish Oil And Smarter Babies
According to a recent study which was published in the 'Archives of Disease in Childhood' in 2006, babies born to women who took fish oil supplements during the last 4 months of pregnancy had better hand to eye coordination, were better speakers and could understand more at the age of two and a half, than babies born to mothers who were given olive oil instead. The Study The double blind, randomised, placebo-controlled trial was conducted by the University of Western Australia and led by Professor Susan Prescott. Also involved in the study were King Edward Memorial Hospital for Women, Princess Margaret Hospital for Children and Telethon Institute for Child Health Research and Centre for Child...
Nurturing Your Baby's Speech Development - What...
The way you speak to your baby will help to develop both his or her receptive and expressive language skills. The receptive language (what he or she understands) will be the first to evolve while the expressive (what he or she can say) language will develop a little later. There are ways that you can help both of these skills along. When talking to your baby, keep your words simple and avoid a lot of flowery words. The clearer and the simpler the better. Also try to speak slowly to your baby so that he or she can absorb every word. If you notice that something you said is of particular interest to your baby, repeat it as many times as he or she will listen. Talk about whatever is going on with your...
Bangladeshi Elt Teachers’ Barriers in Making...
The current approach of English Language Teaching (ELT) all over the world is communicative (The Communicative Language Teaching or CLT). Very recently, the academicians of Bangladeshi ELT context with the backing of the Government has founded CLT in the general education .CLT requires interactive classroom activities with the integration of the four language skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking. My present essay is the ponder of Bangladeshi English teachers’ probable barriers in making the classrooms interactive and...
Developing language skills and the growth of cognitive abilities allow children to interact with the surrounding world. Language development begins before birth as the baby perceives the sounds of the womb. There is evidence that the baby possesses receptive language ability well before birth. She can hear and respond to environmental sounds and start to develop memories of them. Expressive language development also begins early. Cooing, which is when the baby produces vowel sounds, begins in the first two months of life. Increased volume in cooing begins to develop around one month of age, and pitch variability can be noticed between two and four months of age. During that time, when you converse...
Early Signs of Dyslexia
While many parents and care givers are quick to place the blame on their selves for the struggles and problems a child may be having with the reading and math in and before school, it is very important to understand the problem may be the child has a type of dyslexia. The speech problems that occur with the dyslexia can be accountable for some of the other problems such as reading, math, listening, and following instructions may be some prevailing early signs of dyslexia. It is very important to have the dyslexia test - an evaluation of the disability to determine some of the possible treatments that would be helpful of the child. The simple and often overlooked problem with a slight speech delay...
Does Your Child With Autism Exercrise Control?
There is a lot of trouble with autistic children managing to achieving self control. This includes in appropriate outbursts, and also potentially dangerous habits, like for instance being aggressive towards friends, or at times harming themselves by banging their heads off walls. In order to stop this and other dangerous behaviors a technique a lot of parents and educators use to stop these autistic tendencies is by using self-management. By giving the autistic child control over him or herself is many times the key to keeping control over violent actions and can be a positive step for other behaviors to be learned as well. The program of self-management is really a great help because it makes the...
As a parent, you may wonder what you can do to help your child learn *how* to speak. Amazingly, most children naturally acquire language just by daily experiences listening to others speak. Parents sometimes try to "jump-start" their child's speech in different ways. Some of these ways intuitively are helpful; other methods may actually discourage children from attempting to speak. Rather than listing things you should not do, let me share with you 3 techniques that I use as a speech-language pathologist to promote language development. You may recognize that you are already using these methods intuitively without realizing it! Let me encourage you to spend some time each day using these...

Many incidents of stuttering crop up early in ones life, but tend to disappear by the time the teenage years roll around. A stutter can be cute or endearing, especially in children, or in the more nebbish heroes of romantic comedies often linked to stress breathing. However, there are some situations in which you do not want to convey that kind of impression. Perhaps you are delivering a speech, or giving a presentation at a business meeting. Or maybe, on a more personal front, you are about to have some kind of confrontation with someone, and need to show that you must be taken seriously instead of patronized. Cases of stuttering can vary widely in gravity. For some people, bouts are few and far...
A Mandatory Component of Stuttering Treatment...
Man is the only creature who refuses to be what he is. However, every change starts with acceptance. Let's get to the point. This mandatory component is self-acceptance. In this article I am going to tell you about two types of self-acceptance, how you can measure the level of your own self-acceptance and the role of self-acceptance in overcoming your stuttering challenge. Self-acceptance is a crucial and probably one of the toughest elements of overcoming your stuttering challenge process. When I say toughest; I mean to a person who stutters, it's not very easy to let his/her guard down and stop resisting who he/she really is. However, once you manage this, everything starts to fall in the right...

Only a person who has a stutter can truly understand just how much it can impact on your life. Stuttering Device - A Fad Or Miracle Cure?
A stuttering device is a small apparatus which fits inside your ear and looks and feels much like a hearing aid. The main difference is that a stuttering device doesn't amplify the sound, it retransmits it with a slight delay and pitch. This so-called 'choral effect' (also: echo effect), which is the driving principle behind the device, has been well-tested and documented. It basically tricks the brain into believing the stutterer is speaking in unison with somebody else, potentially resulting in significant improvements in fluency. The primary device on the market nowadays is the speecheasy. There are several variations available, ranging from a behind-the-ear version to an almost completely...
Adult Stuttering Treatment
Adult stuttering can cause a great deal of stress to the affected person. Although the exact cause of stuttering is still unknown, researches have proposed several factors that could influence one's susceptibility to stuttering. These factors range from psychological problems like low self-esteem to physiological problems like genetics and neurological abnormalities. Since by far most stutterers recover spontaneously at a very young age, stuttering in adults is not very common. Recent research shows that only 0.73%, or one in 135 adults, exhibit a certain degree of stuttering. To this small group of people, stuttering can however be a distracting, frustrating and even downright debilitating disorder...
