Autism is diagnosed by examining social and psychological responses of children. There is no objective method to diagnose this disease. However, in a recent news item published by an online science news publication scientists have discovered that a simple urine test may be able to diagnose the disease. It was reported that urine from children with autism may have a different molecular signature than that of the normal children. A very robust and sensitive technique called H NMR spectroscopy was used to obtain the results. This is not a technique that can be used in routine laboratories, however such complex techniques are feasible in specialized laboratories. The scientists demonstrated...

The DSM or Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders is a manual published by the American Psychiatric Association. The manual is a tool used by researchers, insurance companies, and physicians to identify mental illnesses in both adults and children and it is currently undergoing revision. The new manual is due out in 2013 and includes some potentially important changes for the Predominantly Inattentive category of ADHD (ADHD-PI). Two of the proposed changes would give folks currently categorized and ADHD-PI, a home of their own sort of speak. Having Inattentive ADD in its own category is a huge deal. There has been very little research done on this sub-type of ADHD and this would...
The Most Common Adhd Symptoms - Why Adhd...
When you read about children of three years old being put on an amphetamine drug, you begin to wonder if ADHD is really being overdiagnosed and also being misdiagnosed. How could a child so young even have a few of the most common ADHD symptoms? Changes in the DSM Edition V Changes are in the pipeline for the next DSM edition which will be published in a few years time. This is the manual which sets out all the criteria by which a medical practitioner can decide whether the child has ADHD or not. But as the whole thing is full of holes and not at all objective in that it relies on parents' and teachers' evaluations of the child's behavior, one wonders what is the best way of assessing the most...
What is Limbic ADHD?
The type of ADHD which is the hyperactive type is treated best with amphetamines which seem to calm the child or adult down so they can focus and concentrate. Limbic ADHD treatment is treated with antidepressants like Wellbutrin, because the symptoms are opposite of the hyperactive type. The Limbic ADHD person appears depressed, has lack of energy and low levels of enthusiasm or the zest for life. Emotions and behavior are based in the limbic section of the brain so if someone has an imbalance in this area and were given stimulants they will become much worse, not better and they would appear to have chronic depression, have a gloomy disposition and have a negative outlook. They can have problems...
The Cost of ADHD - Treatment a Must for...
According to recent studies, ADHD is one of the most costly health conditions in the U.S. - topped only by alcohol abuse and clearly ahead of drug abuse in terms of cost. Annually, alcohol abuse costs American families $86 billion in lost household income. The annual cost for ADHD is $77 billion and the annual cost for drug abuse is $58 billion. Hard costs, like out-of-pocket medical treatment, are only one aspect of lost income. ADHD high school graduates and college graduates make considerably less money annually than their non-ADHD counterparts. Research indicates that it doesn't matter if the person with ADHD has the same level of education as someone who does not have ADHD, the person with ADHD...
Uncover the Truth - Does ADHD Go Away?
Have you ever wondered what having Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder is like? For those who are stressed and tired from their job, they might think that having ADHD is like being high on caffeine. You just keep moving and moving without getting exhausted. Despite the high energy levels, people with ADHD do not get a lot of things done. They can not focus and concentrate on a certain task at hand for a long period of time. They are easily distracted and jump from one activity to another. We all know how hard it is to focus on our work and it is definitely harder for those with ADHD. Lucky for us, ADHD is a disorder for children, right? Wrong. So, the next question is: Does ADHD go away? ADHD is...
Whose Problem Do You Solve? Niche Marketing for...
Massage therapists often have an inherent resistance to "selling" themselves. If you find yourself reading this article: Congratulations! And just so you know, you are not selling out. You are providing a communications platform so that those who need your services can actually find you. That is a service in itself. There is a logical principle that if you solve a client's problem better than your competition, under the same conditions (price, availability etc.) and communicate this to your potential clients, success (however you define this for yourself) is unavoidable. This simple statement opens up a whole drawer of possibilities of refining your communications practice to attract more of what...
Christian Missionaries in Haiti Who Made the...
On January 12 a 7.0 Richter scale earthquake struck the impoverished Caribbean nation of Haiti, bringing widespread death and destruction to the western hemisphere's poorest nation. The earthquake killed at least 200,000 people, injured at least 300,000 others, leveled at least 250,000 residencies, and destroyed or severely damaged at least 30,000 commercial structures. It was Haiti's largest and most destructive earthquake in more than 200 years. Beyond the statistics, the human suffering is amongst the most heartbreaking the world has seen in some time - the break-up of families, the orphaned children, the lack of food and water, the emotional and physical pain, the fight for daily survival. Royal jelly can help you in so many areas. You can get it from pharmacies or from a beekeeper which is by far the best option as its as fresh as possible. Careful when you buy royal jelly because there are many Chinese products that their quality cannot be guaranteed. Another thing you need to pay attention to is that you need to keep it in the fridge in order to be fresh. You can consume it by placing some on a toothpick and placing it under your tongue. However it has a bit of bitter taste not like honey. A great way to make it taste better is by mixing 1 kilo of honey with 10 grams of jelly. If you use this way it doesn't need a fridge as its protected by the honey. A normal consumption rate for...

A Biomedical Autism Intervention Doctor Explains: A sulfite sensitivity does not constitute an automatic allergy to sulfa drugs and vice versa. Many people with asthma who have obvious reactions to sulfites can many times have some in small amounts and suffer no adverse reactions. A sensitivity reaction to sulfites is not a true allergy like a sulfa drug allergy, and so allergy testing for sulfites in unreliable. Among the best ways to control the symptoms of autism is by studying the dietary patterns of an autistic child; caregivers need to monitor and report any significant changes in their child's behavior when diet is modified or contains either glutton and casein. This is because both substances are difficult to digest since they...
Autism & Sulfur Sensitivity - Part 1
A Biomedical Autism Intervention Doctor Explains: The issue of sulfur sensitivity (mistakenly referred to as sulfur allergy) to medications or nutritional products that contain sulfur amino acids or other sulfur or sulfate supplements is a confusing topic. Let's tackle the 'sulfur allergy' question first. Sulfur is a natural element in the earth's crust, and is found as element 16 on the periodic table of elements. It is found as a crystalline yellow solid in nature, and is referred to as brimstone. As pure sulfur or complexed with minerals it has a wide variety of roles in the natural world. How To Manage ADD/ADHD
I make my living teaching others how to manage ADD/ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). While there are no magic "cures" for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, there are various methods that can help one manage the symptoms and challenges. As a result, sufferers of ADD/ADHD are quite capable of leading happy, healthy, and productive lives. 1. Coaching. For adults, Coaching focuses on practical ways to manage Attention Deficit Disorder in an everyday context. It is a way to learn how to be more effective and focused at work and at home. Coaches work to help those manage ADD. Coaches work in person and are usually available via phone and Internet. 2. In my personal and clinical...

Teen Attention Deficit Disorder - They're...
What would you think if your child received advice to "tune in, turn on, and drop out"? Would you think it was Timothy Leary, Ken Kesey and the 'Merry Pranksters' Haight-Asbury Bay hippies era revisited? What would you think if your child's attention span issues were being treated by well-intentioned district psychologists with a known hallucinogen from a mushroom called psilocybin? Think again, because that's almost the case in many American schools, as the pharmacy kit-bag opens further with speculative treatment therapies for teen attention deficit disorder. Wide spread medication of American kids and adults is based on use of amphetamines and stimulants, which in recent clinical research are...

Attention Deficit Disorder ADD is talked about frequently in main stream media. With movie stars and public figures glamorizing this disorder it may seem like a "cool" problem to have. ADD is not cool for those who struggle to get good grades and can't seem to finish a task. Attention Deficit Disorder and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder have quite a track record. Millions of young people and adults alike know the frustration and anguish that can go hand in hand with ADD or ADHD. Happily, biofeedback for the...

Is Attention Deficit Disorder Protected Under...
Recently the staff at the Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Information Library was asked if children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder were included under the American with Disabilities Act of 1990. This parent wrote that if in fact Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder was included in the Disabilities Act, her child was being discriminated against by his school. Parents want the very best for their children. And people tend to want everything that they feel that they are entitled to from their school. But sometimes we can expect too much from our public agencies, and sometimes we look in the wrong places for help. The answer to the reader's question is somewhat long and...
Give Big or Go Home! Oprah's New TV Show...
This weekend I watched The Big Give, Oprah's new television show whereon she handpicked celebrities to judge the giving initiatives spearheaded to help genuinely needy people. Some of those selected to be recipients of charitable assistance were a wounded American soldier who was struggling making his monthly mortgage payment, a homeless woman, a UCLA medical student desirous of providing plastic surgery to underprivileged kids, a couple who selflessly care for down syndrome children, and a woman whose husband was killed while working the late night shift at Home Depot as a store manager. The heartfelt initiatives designed to impact and bring together the community around these special people...
Information on Laryngomalacia
Laryngomalacia is a congenital abnormality of the laryngeal cartilage. It is thought to represent a delay of maturation of the supporting structures of the larynx. This disorder may become obvious as early as the first two weeks of life, with noisy, raspy breathing while taking a breath in. Laryngomalacia is the most common cause of stridor in infancy. Furthermore, it is the most common congenital laryngeal anomaly. It is often associated with general noisy respiration. The stridor is most prominent when the child is in the supine position or when the child is agitated. More force able inspiration tends to effect in a louder stridor quality due to greater prolapse and thus greater obstruction...

Is There An Autism Yeast Infection Link?
The exact cause of autism is unknown with theories ranging from the result of immunization, genetics, or a combination of both. However, latest findings have demonstrated that there may also be an autism yeast infection link. So what does yeast have to do with autism? Studies show that autistic children have different 'gut flora' when compared to non-autistic children. Generally, healthy "good" bacteria are at work throughout the digestive tract to keep the digestive system operating normally. However, repeated doses of antibiotics (as would be prescribed, for example, for a regular childhood ear infection), or even exposure to common childhood diseases such as chicken pox, can destroy a large...

Most people cannot relate to the profound challenges of life with autism. But if this is something you are all too familiar with, you are naturally interested in any type of therapy that has shown promise and could be used to change the life of a friend or loved one. One such treatment for autism and Asperger's syndrome is neurofeedback. Consider the case of a 14-year-old girl named Carly, whose story was featured on 20/20. At a very young age, she had been diagnosed with autism, and had been written off as being mentally incompetent. As she grew, her body flopped and flailed and her tantrums were continuous, but her parents refused to give up. They worked 40-60 hours a week with Carly. Progress was...
In a divorce there is almost never a more contentious issue than that of parent custody, or put simply, which parent has the kids living with them. This issue becomes that much more magnified when at least one of the children is a special needs child. But why is this? There are a few simple reasons. 1.Care of the child - In most cases, both parents love all the children, special needs or not, greatly. Unfortunately though, when it comes to a special needs child though, love may not be enough. There can be a great amount of patience required with a special needs child, and a great amount of understanding, not only of their condition, but also of their individual habits, tendencies, and quirks that...
Disabled Children - Things Not to Say to a...
How do you approach a disabled child? What do you say to the parents? I've worked with special needs children for many years and have heard many comments made by non-thinking adults in front of disabled children and their parents. Firstly many people speak to the parent of special needs children as if the child is not capable of hearing or understanding that she's being talked about. Instead make sure you speak to the child directly, if possible getting down to her level and make eye contact. Treat her as you would any other child of her age. If she can't answer the parent will respond for her. However special needs children mostly enjoy the loving touch of an adult. Don't say anything to a disabled...
Something Special For That Special Someone -...
There's no question that special needs children deserve every bit as much pleasure and satisfaction in their environment as all other children. The only question, then, is how to create it? This article will describe how to create custom special needs beds that fulfill a parent or guardian's needs to provide for their child's unique circumstances and a child's needs to feel self-expressed. Goodbye Plain & Ordinary Beds: Hello Custom Theme Beds Special needs kids need not be restricted to a sterile, bland and utilitarian bed. They can enjoy all the richness of a custom theme bed just like their non-special needs peers. Whether it's a race car bed, a tree house bed, or a castle bed, all the...

As new parents, we start out parenting our children, as we where parented, and want our children to react the same way as we did. However, children with special needs are likely to throw us a curve ball, always when we least expect it. If the tried-and-tested ways of your mother don't work for your children, then it's time to make a change. The following strategies may go against what you've always been led to believed about child-rearing, but exceptional children require exceptional ingenuity. - Behaviour analysis is a start - Start with the basics of behaviour analysis. Flying With Your Special Needs Child - Tips...
I recently flew with my three young children. My youngest has special needs, and although I have traveled with my other two children easily, I found myself in uncharted waters which required me to do a little extra planning for my special needs child. Each special needs child is different and their needs may vary. I have developed the following list of tips on how to prepare, what to bring, what to expect, and who to contact to help other parents who are planning to travel by plane with their Special Needs children. I have discovered that each airlines has slightly different requirements for traveling with special needs and recommend that you contact the airline before your flight to find out what...
Therapies For Children With Special Needs
To make really good choices, about choosing the correct therapies for your child, you will need to know what these therapies actually do, how do these people actually become qualified, how exactly are they suppose to help and how quickly. Having the right information will help you make more informed descions. Should my child be seeing a therapist? Children who aren't in school yet could benefit from seeing a developmental profesional, if there is a significant delay in achieving developmental milestones, such as sitting, crawling, walking or talking, and if there are any concerns regarding other developmental delays. Trust your instincts; (early intervention) will not only benefit your child, but...
Special Needs Trusts - Planning For Children...
We frequently work with families with special needs children to set up special needs trusts. A special needs trust is simply a way to leave assets to take care of a special needs child without jeopardizing their entitlement to government benefits. For a special needs individual, government benefits are often vital. Medicaid is typically the only type of health insurance that a special needs child can get. The problem in planning for a special needs child is that if you leave an inheritance directly to a special needs benefits recipient, they will lose their benefits. They will be face with spending down those assets until they can re-qualify for Medicaid and oftentimes the assets run out months or...
Every parent knows the difficulty of finding a good child-care provider or babysitter. Not only should the care provider be patient and caring, they should be experienced and responsible. When a child has special needs, it can make searching for the right child-care provider even more difficult. Children with special emotional, mental of physical needs often can't be cared for by just anyone. A sitter with experience watching typical children may be quickly overwhelmed by caring for a child with special needs. Sometimes a simple interview just doesn't give enough information on how a provider might care for a child and additional information is often needed. A premium childcare provider may be one...
I have done many past recordings on the issue that many children with Autism have with constipation. A wonderful fiber supplement that you can get for your child is called Tru Fiber. New Beginnings Nutritionals carries Tru Fiber. Tru Fiber can be easily mixed into water or juice and is a granule type of fiber supplement. Since Tru Fiber does not have a bad taste, many of the children in my practice can take this supplement very easily. Tru Fiber can be taken between 1 and 3 times per day, with anywhere from ½ scoop to 1 full scoop as a dose. The exact dose will have to be regulated by what seems to work well for your child. Many children in my practice use 1 scoop twice a day of Tru Fiber. Besides...
Repetition and Praise
When designing a plan for teaching a child with Autism, it is important to implement a lot of trial and error along with observation. Each child is different. You want to approach education from the direction of the child's strengths. Always set up a situation for success. I have found that repetition is great for my son when learning fine motor skills such as, writing, dressing, and bathing. These are areas that he has the most trouble in. Breaking down each task to the smallest action has been best for him. I would demonstrate the first thing he needed to do, and work with him until he was able to accomplish it. I only step in and help when I see that he is getting...

The student in this case study has autism. His name is Adam. Adam is seven years old. He is in a Special Day Class for Severely Handicapped students. Adam's 3-year evaluation needed to be completed to determine eligibility for his special education services. Adam has an advocate and parents who are intensely involved with his education. When the assessment plan was presented to the parents, they requested additional assessments including a functional analysis, occupational therapy and an assistive technology assessment. A copy of the signed assessment plan was given to the appropriate specialists: psychologist, occupational therapist, speech therapist, speech therapist, nurse and special...
A Biomedical Autism Doctor Explains The Biomedical Intervention Timeline A question that I am frequently asked is "how long will my child have to do biomedical therapies." This question usually arises in response to dietary changes such as the gluten-free or casein-free diet, or other biomedical therapies for autism-spectrum disorders such as Methyl-B12, nutritional supplements, antifungal therapy (with the use of Nystatin), detoxification support and others. In short, the best answer I can give is 'as long as the therapies are working you will want to continue treating.' At this time (2009 at the time of this article) we do not have 25 to 30+ years of clinical experience in treating children on...
What is Autism and What Causes Autism?
Autism by definition is a psychiatric developmental disorder that usually shows itself in the form of communication disorders, short attention span and social problems. Children that show autistic features will not be interacting and playing the way a typical child would. Years ago autism was incredibly rare and almost never found in children. Studies have shown about 1 in every 110 children are diagnosed with autism today. That number was unheard just 40 years ago. Autism is the most severe disorder in what is called the autism spectrum; some less severe disorders in this same spectrum are Pervasive Developmental Disorder or PDD, Pervasive Developmental Disorder Not Otherwise Specified, Rett...
